I ran my first ever 10k this Saturday and I honestly could not be more proud of myself! I used to despise running and thought it was the worst thing possible to do. In high school I definitely was athletic, but in a way different way. I rode and competed horses so I was always busy doing horse shows and practicing with my horse that other sports just did not fit in my schedule. When it came to running in gym class, I never even tried but stayed and walked with my girls to catch up on the latest gossip. Once college hit I competed horses on a college level, but the parties, going out to eat, and late night study sessions really did not do so well with my metabolism. I gained the awful freshman 20! Once I graduated I knew I needed to do something about it so I started working out, but then my work schedule became nuts (I work 55 hours a week with 2 jobs). I pretty much only have time for the gym 2 nights a week so I started running to make up for it. I even started doing 5ks with my friends and I realized wow this is actually kind of fun!
About 3 months ago one of my best friends asked if I wanted to do a 10k with her (6.2 miles). I was very hesitant at first because I have only really ran 3 miles and I did not know if I could add another 3! But then she said to me “Nicole, there is wine at the end and you also get a medal”. She knew me too well, and I signed up that afternoon!
When the day came I was petrified! I really did not train as much as I would have liked and I was afraid I would not be able to run the whole 6 miles. I definitely surprised myself! I ran the whole thing and only stopped at water stations! I definitely believe my adrenaline was at an all time high and everyone on the sidelines really helped pump me up! I will not lie though, the last mile was killer and I really just wanted to stop and walk, but my friend Emily helped pump me up and keep me going. Oh yeah, and knowing there was wine at the end helped too!!!!
